It’s been a long wait for ‘Star Wars’ fans to get a chance to see the next chapter of the franchise, but that may be changing in 2016.
Disney has officially announced the release date for ‘The Force Awakens’ in November, with the film set to hit theaters in the fall.
‘The Empire Strikes Back’ will be released in March of 2019.
‘Star Trek Beyond’ is scheduled for release in 2021.
The announcement comes after Disney’s financials released earlier this week, showing that ‘Star War’ is expected to make a profit for the first time in a decade, thanks to its success on the movie box office.
The film is expected make a further $300 million, making it Disney’s third biggest domestic release.
Disney CEO Bob Iger has previously said the company’s focus is on making the next generation of Star Wars films.
Disney CEO Bob Raffa also previously said that Disney is looking to release the Star Wars trilogy in three parts: ‘Star’ is in its third film, ‘The Phantom Menace’ is coming in 2018 and ‘The Star Wars Anthology’ will arrive in 2019.
In the last two years, Disney has released four Star Wars movies: ‘The Return of the Jedi’ in December of 2017, ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ in April of 2019 and ‘Rogue Two: A New Hope’ in June of 2019, all of which are expected to be profitable.
The only exception to that trend has been ‘StarWars Episode VII: The Force Awakens,’ which has been a disaster for Disney.
‘Rogue’ has not been able to meet expectations at the box office, making its release even more disappointing.
‘Catching Fire’ was released in 2018, and is now considered Disney’s second-worst film, behind ‘The Good Dinosaur.’
Disney’s 2018 financials showed that ‘Rogue Nation’ and ‘Coco’ both had strong second-quarter results, but the third film in the Star Trek saga ‘Star WARS: The Last Jedi’ has failed to meet the expectations of its fans.
Disney’s third installment in the ‘Star wars’ franchise is expected in 2019, with ‘The Fate of the Furious’ to arrive in theaters in 2019 and the film will also have the chance to cross over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
‘Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War’ will open in theaters March 4, 2019, and will feature ‘Star Captain America: Civil War’ as well as other new films.
