In 2018, Australia’s top female opera musicians received a combined total of just over $17 million.
That was just the second time in the past 20 years that the country’s top performers received that kind of cash.
In 2014, the top male opera singers received more than $13 million.
In 2017, the first year of the Top 10 Australian Opera Awards, the country received more money than its top female performers.
And in 2016, the two top male singers in the country got more than half of the country total.
But these days, the awards are not as big as they used to be, and the men who receive them tend to be far more well-known than their female counterparts.
Australian opera singers were among the top performers in 2016 but they didn’t receive a record-breaking amount of money in 2018.
In fact, the Top 100 Australian Opera Singers of 2018 received just $3.6 million in total.
That’s down from the record $22.5 million that they received in 2016.
Australian opera singer Amanda Hynes received just over half of that total.
“It’s very sad,” she told CNN’s Victoria Derbyshire program.
“It’s really sad that we’re seeing this kind of decline in Australian opera.”
I know the women who perform, they’re just looking for something more meaningful than just singing the music.
“Hynes said the awards had become increasingly “politically correct” and that it was unfair for the performers to receive money when it could go towards their families.”
The biggest problem for Australian opera is that it’s not a place for women to be in,” she said.”
A lot of times, the female performers don’t have the same career opportunities as the men.
“Australian opera has been in decline for decades.
Hynes and her fellow performers said the money should go towards women in the industry.”
We’re trying to make sure we get the money back for all the amazing women who have come before us, to give them something to live for,” Hynes said.
