In this post, we’ll explore a new album by one of the country music industry’s most iconic female stars.
As a female rock singer, Kelli Gee has played a huge role in American music history and will be performing at this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in January.
This isn’t her first foray into country music.
As The Atlantic reports, she’s a member of the group Lauryn Hill’s band, which released their debut album, The Black Album, in 2015.
In her own words: The Black Music I grew up listening to was the only music I knew about when I was young.
I was never able to understand the complexities and nuances of the genre because I was born and raised in the 1970s and 1980s, which was a time of racism and sexism.
I had never heard of a black person playing guitar, singing or making music until I was 13, and the only songs I remember from that era were hip-hop and rock music.
It’s no surprise that Kelli is an active participant in the country genre.
But it wasn’t always that way.
When Kelli was growing up, she grew up hearing a lot of country music from her family.
She says her parents used to bring her home from church with a tape of their favorite song from their childhood.
“I would listen to it every night,” she tells The Atlantic.
“I remember my dad saying, ‘When you’re older, you’ll love it more than me, and when you’re younger, you won’t.’
I was always the type of kid that loved anything that was black.”
That’s not to say that Kellis love of country doesn’t extend to music.
She tells TheAtlantic that she grew into a “rock star” by the time she was 12 years old.
“When I was 12, I would sit in the back of my room and listen to country music, and I would think about being a rock star because I could dance and sing,” she says.
Kelli grew up in the shadow of country’s biggest stars, including country singer Willie Nelson and country singer Sam Cooke.
But she’s not the only female country artist to have found success outside of the US.
Lauryn, the first black woman to win the US Grammy Award for Best Country Album in 1978, also wrote and performed country music and released her first album in the 1990s.
She also has the distinction of being one of only two female singers to win an American Music Award for a solo album, the other being Whitney Houston.
According to the Associated Press, Kellys album is the most commercially successful country album of all time.
In 2016, KELLY GEE, who was born Kelli E. Gee in Dallas, Texas, began a long-term relationship with singer-songwriter Jad Abumrad.
Abumrad and Kelli have been together for nearly 20 years.
On Sunday, KKelly released her new album, Blues are Back, which is set to be released on February 6, 2017.
A source tells The Guardian that the album is based on a song from the film of the same name.
It will be the first album by a female singer from the country/folk genre to be officially released in the US, and is the first new album from a woman since the debut album by the rock band, The Byrds.
Bluez are back.
